The Witcher star Anya Chalotra recently praised her co-star Henry Cavill's extensive knowledge of the Andrzej Sapkowski fantasy books that served as the basis for the Netflix series.
Chalotra emphasized that Cavill's profound understanding of the established Witcher lore wasn't off-putting during an interview with Variety. "No, it's actually refreshing to work with someone who has such a love for the material," she stated. "It truly is. Cavill knows more about the world of The Witcher, the rules, the terms, and the extensive Witcher knowledge than anyone else. It's a blessing to collaborate with him because there are days when you may doubt the world a bit more, and he's there to reassure us, saying, 'Hold on, we've got this.'"
However, Cavill's encyclopedic knowledge of Sapkowski's novels and short stories will not be available beyond Season 3. The British actor will be stepping down from his role as the series' protagonist Geralt of Rivia after the latest batch of episodes. Liam Hemsworth has already been chosen to replace him in Season 4. In a recent interview, executive producer Tomek Baginski addressed the transition from Cavill to Hemsworth, assuring fans that there is "a very, very good plan" in place. Baginski also described Hemsworth's portrayal of Geralt as "highly faithful to the lore" and "extremely exciting to witness."
The Witcher Star On Henry Cavill's Departure
Chalotra herself recently shared her thoughts on Cavill's departure, acknowledging that filming The Witcher Season 4 without her original leading man will be an unusual experience. "It's going to be strange, and I think I'll definitely feel that sense of loss. I believe we all will," she expressed. Nevertheless, Chalotra expressed enthusiasm about Hemsworth joining the show, stating that she "can't wait" to collaborate with the Australian actor. She also expressed her optimism for future seasons of The Witcher, despite Cavill's absence.
However, the future of the show almost didn't come to fruition. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich revealed that Netflix initially offered her and the other executive producers the option to conclude the series with Season 3, rather than continuing without Cavill. Hissrich disclosed that they ultimately turned down this offer because they believed there were "too many untold stories" yet to be explored.
The Witcher Seasons 1 and 2, as well as Season 3, Volume 1, are currently available for streaming on Netflix. Season 3, Volume 2 is scheduled to premiere on the platform on July 27, 2023.
