X-Men '97: Wolverine, Cyclops, Rogue and More Feature in New Merch

A Marvel enthusiast recently stumbled upon some X-Men '97 merchandise that offers a glimpse into the appearance of Rogue, Cyclops, and Wolverine in the highly anticipated animated revival.

On Instagram, user xeoptoys shared captivating images of action figures depicting X-Men '97 versions of Wolverine, Cyclops, and Rogue. The packaging of these action figures prominently showcases five iconic X-Men characters, including Storm, Cyclops, Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine, suggesting that they will likely take center stage as the main protagonists of the series. However, the packaging also features beloved characters such as Beast, Jubilee, Jean Grey, Bishop, and Morph, albeit on the sides, indicating that X-Men '97 will offer a diverse array of heroes to explore in its continuation of the celebrated X-Men: The Animated Series.

What Is X-Men '97?

Marvel Studios initially announced X-Men '97 in November 2021 as an exciting addition to their lineup. This upcoming series will serve as a revival of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, which captivated audiences on the Fox Kids Network for five seasons and 76 episodes from October 1992 to September 1997. While specific plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, it has been confirmed that X-Men '97 will continue the story several months after the series finale of X-Men: The Animated Series, titled "Graduation Day." The notorious Mister Sinister is set to return as the primary antagonist in X-Men '97, with Christopher Britton reprising his role as the iconic X-Men villain.

Additional information has revealed that Magneto will join the titular team in the absence of Professor X, and the attempt on Charles Xavier's life in the original series finale will have significant repercussions, leading to a heightened level of empathy and understanding towards mutants. The first season of X-Men '97 is planned to comprise 10 episodes, while a second season is already in development. Notably, X-Men '97 marks the first X-Men project from Marvel Studios since the company regained the film and television rights to these beloved characters from 20th Century Fox.

X-Men '97 Voice Cast Causes Controversy

X-Men '97 will feature the return of several beloved voice actors from X-Men: The Animated Series, reprising their roles in the animated revival. Cal Dodd will once again lend his voice to Wolverine, Lenore Zann will portray Rogue, and George Buza will bring Beast to life. However, Alyson Court will not be returning as Jubilee, as she expressed her desire for an Asian-American actor to voice the character instead. While Marvel Studios has not officially unveiled the complete voice cast for X-Men '97, there have been rumors circulating about potential castings. In May 2023, a leak suggested that Brazilian actor Gui Agustini would voice Roberto da Costa/Sunspot in the series. This rumored casting drew criticism from fans who felt that it whitewashed the fan-favorite X-Men character. The backlash also targeted the showrunner, Beau DeMayo, who subsequently announced his departure from Twitter until the controversy subsided.

While an official release date has yet to be confirmed, rumors indicate that X-Men '97 is slated to premiere on Disney+ in January 2024.
