The Story of The Eminence in Shadow
Daisuke Aizawa's light novel series, The Eminence in Shadow, first gained traction when it began serialization on the user-generated, self-publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May 2018. It was later acquired by Enterbrain, which has been publishing the books since November 2018. Following a familiar isekai trope, the story starts with an ordinary teenager being hit by a truck, dying, and being transported to a fantastical world. Reborn as Cid Kagenou, the protagonist establishes a clandestine organization known as Shadow Garden to combat the nefarious Cult of Diablos. However, The Eminence in Shadow offers a captivating twist on the isekai formula. While the Cult of Diablos is a genuine and dangerous threat to the world, Cid firmly believes that it is an elaborate role-playing game orchestrated by his newfound companions.
The unconventional approach taken in this popular subgenre has struck a chord with light novel enthusiasts. As of February, Aizawa's series has sold over four million copies worldwide, leading to the creation of a spin-off manga titled The Eminence in Shadow! Shadow Side Story, which has been serialized in Comp Ace since July 2019.
Nexus adapted the series into an anime, with the first season premiering in October as part of the fall 2022 lineup. Directed by Kazuya Nakanishi (known for Darwin's Game) and written by Kanichi Katou (known for Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun), the show received positive reception from critics and developed a dedicated fan base. The Eminence in Shadow features Seiichirō Yamashita (from Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town) as Cid, alongside Kana Hanazawa (from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Princess Alexia Midgar and Asami Seto (from My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!) as Alpha.
Yen Press handles the distribution of both Aizawa's light novel series and the spin-off manga in North America.
