Logan Paul made a surprising return to the WWE ring this past Saturday at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view. He competed in the Men's Money in the Bank Ladder Match alongside Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura, Damian Priest, LA Knight, Santos Escobar, and Butch. Despite being considered one of the favorites, Paul did not emerge victorious in the seven-way match. However, during an attempted springboard Spanish Fly with Ricochet, the maneuver did not go as planned, resulting in a nasty fall for Paul. Fortunately, he was immediately attended to by ringside referees, and no serious injuries were reported. Nonetheless, the botched spot led to some adjustments in WWE's plans for the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view.
Originally, if the spot had been executed successfully, it would have marked the second time Paul and Ricochet had gained viral attention for their daring stunts since the beginning of the year. The first instance was a double springboard crossbody during the Men's Royal Rumble match. According to wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, the initial plan was for Paul and Ricochet to face off at SummerSlam. However, due to the botched spot, a backstage brawl had to be filmed to keep the storyline progressing. Ricochet subsequently challenged Paul to a face-to-face confrontation on next week's episode of Monday Night Raw.
Meltzer explained, "The original idea was for that spot we discussed—the Spanish Fly through the tables—to become this viral sensation and generate a lot of buzz leading up to the match. While people did see it, the execution wasn't smooth enough to seamlessly lead into the match. So instead, they opted for the backstage brawl angle. They will shoot the angle next Monday on Raw to set up the match. Rather than having Logan Paul in a high-profile match, the focus now is on delivering an incredible athletic showcase, and Ricochet is the perfect opponent for that."
