Netflix recently released the highly anticipated sixth season of their hit series, Black Mirror, which delivered its signature psychologically intense content. One of the standout episodes from this season is titled "Beyond the Sea," featuring acclaimed actors Josh Hartnett (known for Penny Dreadful) and Aaron Paul (famous for Breaking Bad). The episode is set in a futuristic version of 1969, where astronauts live seemingly normal lives on Earth through the use of robots. However, things take a dark turn, as is typical in the series, leading to a twist ending that divided some viewers.
Aaron Paul, who shined in his role in "Beyond the Sea," recently shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he was almost part of a previous Black Mirror episode called "USS Callister" from the preceding season. "Yeah, the entertainment industry is fascinating. But once you get to know Charlie [Brooker, the creator], you realize that his words hold weight," Paul stated in the interview. "He was genuinely excited when he learned that I wanted to be a part of 'USS Callister' as a nod to the Breaking Bad fans. It was like a little Easter egg. I've been a huge fan of Black Mirror since its inception in the UK, and I had always expressed my desire to join the universe that Charlie has created. I'm glad he kept me in mind."
Paul further explained that they had attempted to collaborate on a previous season but encountered scheduling conflicts. Nevertheless, he expressed his gratitude that Brooker persisted in considering him for future episodes, ultimately leading to his role in "Beyond the Sea."
"Oh, absolutely. Being a part of 'Beyond the Sea' was an absolute dream come true. When I received that phone call with the offer, I couldn't contain my excitement. I quickly opened up the script on my phone and devoured the entire episode in just over an hour. It was an intense read, and I was thrilled that Charlie thought of me for such a complex character," Paul shared enthusiastically about his involvement in the Black Mirror episode this season.
Netflix describes Black Mirror as follows, "The show looks inwards, at the darker aspects of humanity and society. This is done through the theme of technology, hence the second meaning. The black mirror is the screen that rules our lives. Taking contemporary phenomena (ranging from the wild popularity of talent shows on TV to the impact of social media and smartphones on our lives) as a starting point and speculate how such phenomena could/would evolve in the future. Each episode tells a different story with different protagonists and focuses on a different theme."
Black Mirror Season 6 is now available exclusively for streaming on Netflix.
