Since its premiere on Adult Swim, My Adventures with Superman has taken flight, introducing fans to a fresh yet undeniably classic take on the iconic DC character. The series follows Clark and Jimmy as they embark on their internships at the Daily Planet, which leads them into the orbit of Lois Lane and sets the stage for their thrilling adventures. Portraying Superman is the talented Jack Quaid, and stepping into the role of such an iconic character has been an exhilarating experience, particularly when transitioning from the gritty and outlandish world of The Boys. ComicBook had the opportunity to chat with Quaid about his portrayal of Superman and how it compares and contrasts with his work on The Boys.
Quaid has been a longtime fan of Superman, reminiscing about his childhood days when he transformed into his own version of the Man of Steel, dubbing himself Super Jake. Now, he brings his own voice and personality to the character, a prospect that fills him with excitement. Quaid shared his enthusiasm, saying, "Absolutely. I grew up as a huge nerd. When I was a kid, I'll have to find a photo of this and post it, but I dressed up as my own version of Superman when I was a kid. His name was Super Jake. And I basically took a white T-shirt and drew on it with a Sharpie. It was just like the Superman triangle, but with a J in the middle. I think I had a Batman cape. It was a quirky amalgamation of different elements."
"But I loved Superman as a kid, and I think I got the email saying that, 'Do you want to audition to play Superman?' And I think my first reaction was like, 'Oh yeah, sure, I'll be Superman.' I just never thought it would happen in a million years. But you miss a hundred percent of the shots you don't take, so I put together a tape and sent it in," Quaid said.
At one point, Quaid had assumed that he didn't land the role, but fortunately, that turned out to be a mistaken belief. "A couple of weeks passed, which usually indicates that you might not have been chosen. But then I received the news, and I couldn't believe it. Even now, it's still surreal for me to say, 'I am Superman,' out loud. Uttering those words doesn't feel real. However, I had the opportunity to watch the show last night. I finally got some screeners, and I absolutely adore it. I love its authenticity and how it focuses not only on Clark/Superman but also on Lois and Jimmy, highlighting their integral roles. It has been an absolute joy for me."
"And also coming from a show like The Boys, which can be so dark and really taking the... I never know if I can swear in these, but taking the cheese out of superheroes. And then to go from that to playing a character who is just so genuine and just wants to do the right thing, it's such a breath of fresh air. It's very, very cool. And I consider it a huge honor to play this character. It's been amazing," Quaid said.
Quaid is gradually growing accustomed to the fact that his voice now embodies Superman, and while there are many aspects of the series that he cherishes, the dynamic between Clark and Lois holds a special place for him. "To be honest, it really hit me last night. While doing the ADR, I caught glimpses and context around certain moments. But last night, it truly hit me. It hit me hard. I still find it hard to believe, but last night made it feel slightly more real. I absolutely adore the dynamic between Clark, Jimmy, and Lois. I found myself getting unexpectedly emotional during the Clark and Lois scenes. Their connection is incredibly sweet. We've witnessed their relationship unfold throughout the ages, but the way the show's creative team crafted those moments is truly beautiful. So, I still have moments of disbelief, but I'm starting to believe it a little more, and it's truly wonderful."
New episodes of My Adventures with Superman premiere every Friday on Adult Swim and are immediately available on Max following their premiere.
