Paul Wesley Says The Vampire Diaries Reboot Would Be a "Hard Pass"

Paul Wesley has expressed no interest in participating in a potential reboot of The Vampire Diaries. In a recent interview with InStyle, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, the actor, known for his portrayal of Stefan Salvatore throughout the show's eight-season run, revealed that he does not long for his vampire character and has no intention of playing another vampire in the future. Consequently, he firmly stated that any Vampire Diaries-related project, including potential reboots or revivals, would be a "firm rejection" for him as an actor.

Wesley clarified his sentiments, saying, "I don't particularly miss anything about portraying him, and I don't mean that in a negative sense. Eight years is a substantial period, and I am genuinely relieved to have concluded that chapter. Eight seasons."

Reflecting on the lengthy duration of the series, he elaborated, "Given the show's longevity, it was essential for each season to offer a different narrative arc to avoid monotony. At one point, my character was completely evil, whereas he initially began as the protagonist and ultimately became a force for good. I enjoyed the challenge of keeping the character's development fresh."

Currently, Wesley has embraced a role quite distinct from that of a vampire. He is now portraying Captain James Tiberius Kirk in the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is available for streaming on Paramount+.

"In the season 1 finale," Wesley reveals to Entertainment Weekly, "we actually encounter a Kirk who is entirely unfamiliar because he does not truly exist. It's a projected alternate timeline—a glimpse into what this world would look like if Captain Pike hadn't perished and continued to lead the Enterprise. Of course, this reality is purely a construct of his imagination. So, when my character meets Kirk, he's not the captain of the Enterprise; instead, he commands the Farragut. This Kirk has never crossed paths with Spock or Uhura, nor has he experienced the events that shaped the original Kirk. In a sense, this allowed for a more flexible interpretation. I won't say it was complete creative freedom, but there was less pressure. I can't delve into season 2 details too much, but we do align more closely with the Kirk we know, albeit in a pre-Enterprise context. The key element is maintaining that inherent quality of Kirk—the incredible gut instinct, unwavering morality, courage, charm, and humor. In the season 1 finale, the humor took a back seat due to intense circumstances, but in season 2, we get to explore that aspect of Kirk a bit more."

Will The Vampire Diaries Universe Continue?

Last summer, Legacies, the third series in The Vampire Diaries Universe, concluded its four-season run on The CW, seemingly signaling the end of the franchise. This came alongside significant changes for the network, as it underwent ownership by Nexstar. However, during that period, Julie Plec, the series creator, shared that there were plans in place to continue expanding the franchise, even though no concrete developments had been put down on paper.

"We had a vision to keep the franchise alive, leading up to the next installment, which currently exists in our minds but has yet to be written," Plec stated at the time. "There will definitely be another chapter. While we're feeling a touch of sadness and taking a moment to regroup, we have more ideas and more stories to tell. There's still much to be done."
