CD Projekt Red has significant goals for the future of Cyberpunk 2077.
One of the main developers at CD Projekt Red involved in the upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 expressed a desire for the sci-fi series to progress similarly to The Witcher. When the original The Witcher launched in 2007, it wasn't widely recognized. Despite its acclaim, CD Projekt Red didn't achieve significant success with the franchise until 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, widely regarded as one of the best games. Similarly, a CDPR team member aims for the Cyberpunk series to grow and advance with its upcoming installments.
In an interview with PC Gamer, CD Projekt Red's narrative director, Igor Sarzyński, emphasized that the team perceives Cyberpunk 2077 as their initial effort. Although the RPG has gained popularity after updates and the Phantom Liberty expansion, Sarzyński believes there's still vast potential for improvement, especially as the team becomes more familiar with this world. Therefore, Sarzyński hopes that "Cyberpunk 2" will deliver a fully immersive experience for players.
"Consider The Witcher games and how much they changed with each installment. We want a similar evolution here," Sarzyński said of the future sequel. "Cyberpunk 2077 was our first venture into a futuristic sci-fi world with a ton of new gameplay mechanics, narrative tone, themes, and art direction. Some of the stuff worked almost right out of the box, such as the art, city design, music, interactive scene system, playstyles. Other aspects took more time to get right, like character progression, NPC interactivity, and optimization. That's natural; it's impossible to nail everything on your first try. Now with all the game elements iterated and working well, we'll focus on connecting them even tighter and creating a coherent, total immersion experience."
At present, little information is available about the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 aside from its existence. Following the release of Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red is likely to gradually shift its focus to working on Project Orion, the codename for the upcoming Cyberpunk follow-up, in the following years. Apart from this sequel, CDPR is also involved in various other game projects. These include a new mainline Witcher game (Project Polaris), a remake of the first The Witcher, a new Witcher game with multiplayer features (Project Sirius), and a completely new undisclosed project (Project Hadar).
