Actress Ruby Barker, who plays Marina in the Netflix series, shared that she didn't receive any help for her mental health problems after shooting Seasons 1 and 2 of the show.
Ruby Barker, known for her role as Marina in Bridgerton Seasons 1 and 2, has expressed her concerns about the lack of mental health support from Netflix and Shondaland during the filming of the popular series. She shared that after finishing Season 1 in 2021, she experienced two psychotic episodes in 2021 and 2022, but neither time did she receive any assistance or even a simple check-in from Netflix or Shondaland.
In her words on Oxford University's LOAF Podcast (via Variety), Barker mentioned,"Not a single person from Netflix, not a single person from Shondaland, since I have had two psychotic breaks from that show, have even contacted me or even emailed me to ask me if I'm okay or if I would benefit from any sort of aftercare or support."
Barker talked about how she started feeling really down during the first season of Bridgerton, and she thought it was because her character made her feel lonely. She ended up in the hospital about a week after they finished shooting that season.
"During filming, I was deteriorating. It was really a really tormenting place for me to be because my character was very alienated, very ostracized, on her own under these horrible circumstances," she said. "When I went into hospital a week after shooting Bridgerton Season 1, it was really covered up and kept on the down-low because the show was going to be coming out. In the run-up to the show coming out, I was just coming out from hospital, my Instagram following was going up, I had all these engagements to do… My life was changing drastically overnight and yet there was still no support and there still hasn't been any support all that time. SO, I was trying really, really hard to act like it was okay and that I could work and that it wasn't a problem."
Barker talked about her situation in a post on Instagram that she later removed. In the post, she shared that she had been having a tough time since her role in "Bridgerton." She also thanked Netflix for giving her the opportunity to be in the show.
She explained that during this challenging period, she had to promote the series even though it felt like she was under a lot of pressure, as if there was an invisible threat forcing her to do it.
"It's almost like I had this metaphorical invisible gun to my head to sell this show because this show is bubbly and fun," Barker explained. "I don't want to come out and poo poo on that because then I'll never work again."
Bridgerton Gets Ready for Its Third Season
Earlier this year, during Netflix's online TUDUM event, they gave us a sneak peek of the third season of the series. This season will focus on the romantic story of Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton). As of now, there is no release date announced for Season 3.
