After years of development, Netflix's Nimona has transitioned from a mere concept to a tangible project, prompting directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane to express their enthusiasm for what they consider their most remarkable undertaking to date. Based on the graphic novel by ND Stevenson, a producer of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Nimona is set in a medieval world intertwined with elements of technology and mysticism, focusing on a shape-shifting teenager. Stevenson serves as both the writer and producer, actively guiding the project at Netflix, while also keeping potential avenues open in case the streaming giant decides to expand the franchise.
Bruno shared with ComicBook.com, "This has genuinely been the most extraordinary project we've ever had the privilege to work on. While we have contributed to numerous animated films, Nimona goes beyond mere entertainment; it carries an essential message. For us, that message is about understanding and connecting with others. We reside in a world that often judges and oppresses certain individuals, and many misunderstood individuals would greatly benefit from being truly known."
Quane added, "The movie's journey is akin to the story's journey itself. In a peculiar way, it refused to fade away. There were individuals who recognized its truth and beauty and continued supporting and fighting for it. Now, we are thrilled that it has finally come to fruition."
Here is the official synopsis for Nimona: "A Knight is framed for a crime he didn't commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he's sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone."
