The Crown's Olivia Williams is set to replace Shirley Henderson, while The Witcher's Jodhi May will step in for Indira Varma in Max's Dune: The Sisterhood series.
According to Deadline, Williams will be taking over the role of Tula Harkonnen after Henderson's departure in February. Meanwhile, May has been cast as Natalya, replacing Varma due to a scheduling conflict. Anna Forester has been announced as the new director, taking over from Johan Renck, who left the project earlier this year. Forester will direct multiple episodes, including the premiere.
Since commencing production in November 2022, Dune: The Sisterhood has undergone several creative changes, including recasting and a shift in the director's chair. "As Dune: The Sisterhood has entered a pre-scheduled hiatus, there are some creative adjustments being made to ensure the best possible series and maintain fidelity to the source material," stated a Max spokesperson. "Johan Renck has completed his work on the series, and a new director will be brought on board. Both parties mutually agreed that Johan would move on to pursue other projects. Additionally, Shirley Henderson will be departing the series, and the role of Tula Harkonnen will be reimagined with Olivia Williams taking over."
When Does Sisterhood of Dune Take Place?
Set within the expansive universe of Dune, originally created by the renowned author Frank Herbert, the upcoming series, Dune: The Sisterhood, is an adaptation of the novel Sisterhood of Dune, penned by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Taking place 10,000 years prior to the events depicted in Dune, this prequel series will delve into the story of the Harkonnen Sisters as they confront formidable threats endangering the future of humanity while establishing the legendary sect known as the Bene Gesserit.
Joining the talented cast, which now includes Olivia Williams and Jodhi May, are Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez, Shalom Brune-Franklin as Mikaela, Faoileann Cunningham as Sister Jen, Aoife Hinds as Sister Emeline, Chloe Lea as Lila, and Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart. Diane Ademu-John continues her role as the creator, writer, and executive producer of the series. The executive production team also consists of Denis Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, Alison Schapker, John Cameron, Mark Tobey, Jordan Goldberg, Brian Herbert, and representatives Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert from the Frank Herbert estate.
Co-produced by Max and Legendary Television, the series is part of Legendary's broader involvement in the Dune franchise, which also includes the highly praised film franchise. The first installment of the cinematic reboot, Dune, was met with critical acclaim in 2021. The popularity of the Dune property has surged even further since then, and audiences eagerly anticipate the release of Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two on November 3, 2023.
