Creature Commandos will mark the inaugural project within the fresh DC Universe to hit screens, and for those concerned about intricate multiversal narratives involving time travel, it seems your worries may be unfounded. As per James Gunn, the writer of Creature Commandos and co-head of DC Studios, the animated series will unfold in the present era, thereby serving as the franchise's inception and current timeline.
Gunn shared this revelation with a fan on Threads, disclosing that the series will be set in the "modern day," without delving into additional specifics or elaborating further.

What will Creature Commandos be about?
Limited information is available regarding the storyline of the series, apart from it being DC's rendition of a team-up involving Universal Monsters. According to Peter Safran, the head of DC Studios, the decision to make the show animated was driven by the costliness of bringing the narrative to life in live-action. Speaking at a DC Studios event in January, Safran explained, "Animation can be a fun way to introduce characters or tell stories that would simply be too expensive to produce in live-action."
During the same event, James Gunn elaborated on Creature Commandos, stating, "The show is based on the incredible team from DC. As part of the DCU strategy, we are seamlessly integrating animation with live-action. Television, movies, and games all coexist within the same universe. We will be casting actors who can portray these characters across multiple projects, some of whom we have already cast. I have personally penned all seven episodes of the series, and it is currently in production. I couldn't be more excited about it."
The ensemble cast of Creature Commandos features Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, and Sean Gunn in the roles of GI Robot and Weasel.
Creature Commandos will serve as the official launch of the DC Universe, although no release date has been announced as of yet. Superman: Legacy, set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, will also play a part in initiating this new universe.
